“We definitely need to be more physical in practice,” Wort said. “That’s one of the differences I’ve seen this year. We need to be more physical against the scouts.
“We’re kinda being nice to those guys. That’s something that hasn’t been that way since I’ve been here. I don’t know why it’s changed.”
Sooners coach Bob Stoops was briefly available to reporters following practice Wednesday night, so I asked him about Wort’s comment and if he agreed that the team wasn’t being physical enough in practice.
“No,” Stoops responded.
I followed that by asking how has practice been this week.
“It’s been the same,” Stoops said. “It’s been good. I think the guys have worked really hard this week.”
So, I asked, why would Wort question the team’s toughness in practice?
“I don’t know; you get 100 guys, you get 100 different opinions,” Stoops said. “I just don’t let 100 of them talk to you.
“And they’re all 18 to 21, so I promise you, you’d get 50 different opinions.
“In fact, I need to quit. I need to just let one guy talk. The captain and that’s it. Probably the best thing, because then I’m not asked about everybody’s opinion.”
