The Tall Tales of Landry Jones

Quarterback builder George Whitfield shared some really great insight with me on what Landry Jones is really like on and off the field.

The two have spent three weeks together since spring break — one in Palo Alto, Calif., one in Norman (both of training) and one in Fort Worth, Texas (before Landry’s wedding to Whitney Hand.) During that time Whitfield got to learn a lot about Landry and just how understated he is as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback.

He told a story that must be shared with you.

As told by George Whitfield:

“I went with him to the bookstore in the stadium. I wanted to go in there and get my nephew a souvenir like a football. So Landry walks in with me. We’re standing behind a guy in line and I’m thinking to myself, ‘Let me ask this guy about Landry with Landry standing by me.’ And this guy was just like a customer like me so I said, ‘Hey what’s Landry Jones like?’

“And he turns around and he’s looking at both of us and he goes ‘Oh, he’s probably an inch or two taller than your friend right there.’ He goes, ‘Now Landry’s a big dude. You’ll know when you see him. When he walks into a room that guys big. I’m telling you what.’

“I’m just smiling trying not to laugh because he didn’t realize he is talking to Landry. And then on the counter he’s got a Landry Jones jersey he was buying and he’s got two magazines he’s getting with Landry on the cover and his son’s standing there and he’s like a 10-year-old kid.
