Early OU-Notre Dame predictions from across the country
Big games bring bold predictions. Here’s a collection of early prognostications from a variety of analysts on this week’s OU-Notre Dame game:
Bruce Feldman (CBS): Landry Jones and the newly revved up Sooners receiving corps will be the best passing attack the Irish have faced this season. ND figures to get pressure on Jones, but I’ll go with the home team with the more experienced QB in a close one. Oklahoma 21-17.
Kirk Herbstreit (ESPN): This game has all the buildup and hype that you love to see in a game in late October…The big thing, if you’re a Notre Dame fan, to me is to continue to win the turnover margin and get Everett Golson that short field. You’re also going to have to win the small things, like field position and special teams, all these things are going to have to go the way of the Irish for Notre Dame to go on the road to a very tough environment and get out of there at 8-0.
Travis Haney (ESPN): Norman, Oklahoma. It’s rare to have a big game there, an out-of-conference game. Notre Dame scheduled for a home-and-home beginning this year. I like the Sooners at home. Oklahoma, four losses in Bob Stoops’ career at home, typically play well at Owen Field and they’ve played exceptionally well the last month of the season. Notre Dame, kinda squeaking by against Stanford, against BYU, against Purdue. This is a big test for them. They will validate themselves as a top 5 team if they win, but I just think there’s too many skill position players, especially on offense. The receivers, Kenny Stills, Justin Brown, just too much firepower for Notre Dame to keep up with through the course of the game.
Berry Tramel (Oklahoman): This one seems clear. Both teams have stellar defenses. OU has the much better offense. Oklahoma 23-7.
David Ubben (ESPN): Oklahoma hasn’t seen a defense like Notre Dame’s but Notre Dame hasn’t seen an offense like Oklahoma’s. The Sooners receivers are getting more and more in sync with Landry Jones as the season goes on, and Oklahoma looks dominant at home once again, flexing against a ranked team. Oklahoma 31-21.
Fox Sports predictor: Notre Dame will find a way. The defense will keep the Oklahoma running game under wraps and it will make the passing attack dink and dunk instead of bomb away. It’s not going to be a pretty day from the offense, but the Irish ground game will move the chains just enough to pull a Kansas State and keep Jones and company on the sidelines. Notre Dame will win, but it won’t be nearly convincing enough to convince the skeptics or make Alabama and Oregon worry.
