From the department of strange but true comes this nugget courtesy of media observer Josh Bostic. The Sooners this season have played four games that were televised with play-by-play announcers who also called OU football before the Bob Stoops era.

That’s at least 14 years ago.

Mike Patrick did the ABC play-by-play for the OU-Iowa State game. Patrick is a long-timer in the business — he was the voice of ESPN’s Sunday Night Football from 1987-2006. Patrick called the OU at Texas Tech opener in 1992 on ESPN.

Brent Musburger did the play-by-play for the OU-Notre Dame game. Musburger has been around for 40 years and called a bunch of major events. Musburger called a variety of pre-Stoops OU games, including the 1987 OU-Nebraska game.

Bill Land called the OU-Florida A&M game on pay-per-view. Land has been a fixture on Southwest sporting telecasts for many years. He called the 1993 OU-TCU game on HSE, a forerunner of Fox Sports Net.

Brad Nessler called the OU-Texas game. Nessler has been a CBS or ABC/ESPN announcer for 20 years. He currently calls The NFL Network’s Thursday night telecasts. Nessler called the 1997 OU-Texas game on ABC.
Other play-by-play TV voices on Sooner games this season:
Texas-El Paso: Fox Sports’ Mike Morgan.
Kansas State: Big Fox’s Gus Johnson.
Texas Tech: ABC’s Sean McDonough (who in a previous life partnered with Ed Cunningham on CBS college football. Cunningham was the villain who trashed the Belldozer while calling OU-ISU last week.).
Kansas:  Fox Sports Net’s Joel Meyers.
Baylor: Fox Sports Net’s Steve Physioc.
