Tailgate Blog: Bedlam edition

Curt Boecking and his family are fine with rivalries, but that’s not a reason to be rude.

Every time an opposing fan walks past, shouts of ‘Welcome to Norman,’ accompanied with a friendly wave come from Boecking or another member of the tailgate.

Boecking has had his tailgate next to the Education building on campus for 15 years. Before that, they held it for 20 years off Lindsay and Asp.

The tailgate, which consists of family and friends from five stats — including California, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Connecticut and New York, had one main dish: Boecking’s famous “Don’t ask, Don’t tell chili.”

The chili has no chili powder and uses fresh Hatch chilis, which Boecking roasts in August and freezes for the chili that he makes only for Oklahoma’s last home game of the season.

The group ends their tailgate with a Kamikaze and a toast to “honor lots of people but mainly my grandmother who willed me her tickets.”
