Two days after a his second consecutive Bedlam victory in Norman, Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger discussed the Sooners’ Bedlam win, his team and freshman Buddy Hield.
Media: Are you surprised with how your team is playing?
Kruger: Like the way we started. Playing better basketball. Worked hard and made consistent progress throughout. Didn’t play consistently good basketball prior to the holiday break. Played much better basketball. Not surprised. Pleased, but I think most importantly our guys understand we have a lot of work to improve and a lot left to do and guys have a good handle on that.
It seems like this team knows their roles. It’s got to be fun to coach that in this day-and-age. Is that this team?
It’s getting closer for sure. We’re making steady progress it that area. They’re a great group to coach. They’re enthusiasm is high. Energy level is high. Unselfish as a group. Excited about playing better basketball. From that standpoint, it’s great. Most importantly, they’re hungry to get better and that’s a good thing from a coaching perspective.
For those around the league that don’t know him yet, it seems as though Buddy Hield is a revelation for the way he’s playing.
Buddy’s fantastic. He’s like that everyday. He’s just a joy to be around. He’s a good basketball player. Got good athletic ability. High level energy, enthusiasm. Shoots the ball well and doesn’t care about anything except competing to help his team play well. Genuine, and a good guy to be around every day.
Lots of teams are struggling offensively in the Big 12 but on Saturday in Bedlam, your team put up 77 points against a solid defensive team and you had four players in double digits.
Don’t really care how it works out. Balance is nice. We’re moving the ball well. Guys make pretty good plays for each other. Got a lot of improvement. Prior to Christmas, we weren’t making a lot of shots, that bolstered their confidence a bit and boosted confidence coming out of the holiday break.
