Where does Oklahoma rank?

Oklahoma schools have weak reading credentials.

Since 2002, the state's fourth-graders have consistently scored lower than the national average on reading tests for the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

In 2011, among 29 different scores posted by all states and the District of Columbia, Oklahoma had the 11th-lowest score, tied with three other states. For eighth-graders, the state had the eighth lowest among 23 scores, tied with three states.

Nearly 40 percent of the state's fourth-grade boys, and 30 percent of girls, scored below basic on reading. About a third of eighth-grade boys and a fifth of girls scored below basic.
