At the Oklahoma County jail, a correctional officer is not always on each floor. If there's a dispute or fight among inmates in the same cell, it might be some time before staff is aware. If an inmate yells or calls out for help, no one may be there. Inmates are in their cells 23 out of 24 hours. They're supposed to have an hour of “rec” to take a shower and get out of the cell for awhile, yet it might be three to four days before they're let out. I'm told this is because of not having enough staff.
Six to eight weeks ago, the jail stopped serving hot meals. When I called to find out why, I was told the kitchen was being renovated. It's been weeks now and there's never a hot meal for breakfast as there was before; it's now the same breakfast of a bologna sandwich and fruit. Is this how our tax dollars are being used or is this more waste and abuse?
