Cherokees building new medical facilities

TULSA -- The Cherokee Nation, which already operates the largest tribal health system in the nation, is adding to it.

Officials of Oklahoma’s largest Indian tribe say they will spend $100 million to build a 100-bed hospital, two new health care centers and renovate two other health centers.



Financing for the improvements will come from Cherokee casino profits. This will be the largest health care capital investment in tribal history, The Associated Press reports.

Last year, the Cherokees' tribal health system had an estimated 1.2 million patient visits, The AP reports.
