EDMOND — Council members are scheduled Monday to consider the preliminary plat for a new development with 188 homes, a project neighbors are against.
The Thunder Canyon development is planned for south of Covell Road and east of Midwest Boulevard.
The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at 20 S Littler Ave.
Property owners in nearby Redbud Canyon housing addition and along Covell Road oppose the development to be built on 140.33 acres in east Edmond, claiming there are too many houses in a small area. Another concern is that a proposed street leading to Covell Road would run near the backs of some homes and owners feared for the safety of their children.
Property owners want a masonry fence to separate the developments. Dodson Properties, the developer, agreed to a wooden stockade fence.
Redbud Canyon housing addition is to the east of the proposed development. The city's Coffee Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant is to the south. The land to the west is undeveloped.
Developer Aaron Dodson said the homes will be a minimum 2,000 square feet with an average lot of 10,000 square feet. The homes will have city water and sewer.
The proposed housing addition would be divided by a flood plain. The developer will have to build a bridge to connect the two areas. Dodson said he would build in phases.
Gary Courtney, a Redbud Canyon resident, said he doesn't want phase two built until the bridge is constructed. He said property owners have been talking with council members this week, getting ready for Monday's meeting.
