Checks stolen from mailboxes to commit fraud Published: April 10, 2013

SHAWNEE -- At least three times recently, thieves have hit Shawnee mailboxes, taking checks written to pay bills and instead using them for fraudulent purposes.

The Shawnee News-Star reports that police are investigating the thefts from local residences where the stolen checks later were used to create electronic and paper checks with the account information.

Bank officials told her the check had been cashed.

Investigators say the account information on the fraudulent checks was accurate, but the name, address, phone number and other information was not.
