Grove mother jailed after turning over malnourished baby girl

An Amber Alert was issued Friday after the parents of a malnourished infant in northeast Oklahoma fled from law enforcement, authorities say. The baby, 8-month-old Carolinn Altaffer, was brought to a hospital by her mother, China Prater, following negotiations.

— A Grove woman is being held on a complaint of child endangerment after fleeing from authorities with her malnourished 8-month-old daughter.

China Prater, 20, was being held Friday in the Delaware County jail in lieu of bail, said Delaware County sheriff's Capt. Gayle Wells.

An Amber Alert for Carolinn Altaffer was issued early Friday.

It misidentified Prater as China Altaffer, but the mother is not married to the infant's father.

After hours of negotiations, Prater brought Carolinn to Integris Grove General Hospital before 11 a.m. Wells didn't have information Friday afternoon on the whereabouts of the father, Ronald Altaffer, 23.

“The infant is safe and in custody,” Wells said.

The parents fled with Carolinn from their rural Grove residence Wednesday when they learned authorities were looking for them, officials said.

Delaware County Sheriff Harlan Moore said the infant was transferred to a Tulsa hospital. She weighs about 12 pounds and needed medical attention, Moore said.
