Thunder Trades Wilcox for Rose

According to an ESPN.com report, the Thunder has agreed to trade Chris Wilcox to New York in exchange for the expiring contract of Malik Rose.

Rose is earning $7.6 million this season and is a player GM Sam Presti is familiar with from his days as a member of the San Antonio Spurs front office.

Rose played with the Spurs from 1999-05. Presti was with theSpurs from 2000-07.

When asked after practice if Wilcox and Joe Smith would join the team in Phoenix, Thunder coach Scott Brooks said, ”I do not know that right now. As of right now I’m assuming that may take place.”

I have a feeling that Prestis' background with the Spurs had a hand in this deal, just like the Brent Barry/Kurt Thomas deal last year. I'm willing to bet that they buy-out Malik Rose who in turn signs with the Spurs, who happen to be looking for another big man.

Presti, it seems to me, places a high value on the intangibles; he knows Rose from his days with the Spurs, and evidently he sees something there that's worth more than the piddling amount of cash the Knicks might have shipped. Elsewhere, I've seen a theory to the effect that Presti is trying to do something for Weezy, who's been with the franchise for years; if he has a chance to play in New York and not much chance to play here, why not give him that opportunity? Certainly Wilcox was more highly valued around these parts than, say, Mo Sene, who's on his way to clearing waivers.

DM, how about $2 mil? $1 mil to cover Rose's contract and $1 mil to buy out Joe Smith.

Darnell Mayberry grew up in Langston, Okla. and is now in his third stint in the Sooner state. After a year and a half at Bishop McGuinness High, he finished his prep years in Falls Church, Va., before graduating from Norfolk State University in 2004.

Mayberry joined The Oklahoman’s sports staff in 2005 after a year at the Akron Beacon Journal, where he covered the University of Akron men’s basketball team, high schools and recruiting.
