After Friday’s morning shoot-around in preparation for tonight’s game against Minnesota at Chesapeake Energy Arena, Thunder coach Scott Brooks and four-time All-Star Kevin Durant reacted to yesterday’s acquisition of Ronnie Brewer. OKC obtained the 27-year-old Brewer from the New York Knicks in exchange for the Thunder’s second-round pick in the 2014 NBA Draft and cash considerations:

SCOTT BROOKS

Is it accurate to compare Ronnie Brewer to Thabo Sefolosha? “They definitely both have the defensive mindset, the defensive toughness and the ability to play defense. You can have the mindset, but if you can’t do it … He (Brewer) has the physical tools and the mental approach. He has been a great defender in this league. He’s a guy that we can use at different positions. We like multiple-defending guys. He can guard 1s, 2s and 3s and probably some smaller 4s. A lot of our guys are interchangeable parts, so he’s another guy that we can use and we will use as the season goes on.”

How will you use them in rotations? Perhaps Sefolosha and Brewer at the same time? “Some teams demand that you have to have defenders out there to put yourself in the best position to win, but he is definitely a guy we will use and he’ll get opportunities to play. I don’t know how much early on, but I think he has a chance to help us a lot of different ways defensively.”

Did recent developments make Brewer more desirable, or was he already on your radar? “Sam and I has always talk about building our team through a defensive mindset … It gives us a chance to win, but we’re always looking for guys who are going to add to our team defensively. He (Brewer) definitely does. He’s 6-7, has a strong body and he’s another high-character guy who plays for his team.”

How quickly will you be able to activate him? “He’s coming in today and doing all the physicals and everything. Hopefully (Saturday) he’ll be in practice.”

KEVIN DURANT

Your thoughts on Brewer? “Love him. Hate playing against him. I’m glad he’s on our team now. Tremendous defender, great cutter, offensive rebounder. He does all the small intangible things you need for the team. We’re happy to have him. I think he’s closer to home as well (Brewer played collegiately at Arkansas). When guys stay closer to home, their energy level goes up a little bit. I’m excited he’s here for us. Hopefully we’ll get to see him in the next few days, I guess.”

Do you see similarities between him and Thabo? “Yeah, I think they’re the same player. Thabo being in our system, he learned his spots, or where he’s going to get his shots. Of course, Ronnie is just getting here. It’s going to take him a while to get adjusted, but he’s a vet. He’s been through it. He’s been in tough playoff battles. He’s played in tough games. We’re looking forward to having him around.”

Did you have a chance to say good-bye to Eric Mayor? “Yeah, I texted him yesterday. I kind of felt this one coming. He tore his ACL last year, came back this year. I don’t think he was 100 percent to start the season. These last few weeks, he started to play. You see he took his knee brace off, started to feel a little better. I’m happy he’s going to a situation where he gets to play in his contract year. It’s tough to see him go. I really can’t say enough about Eric and his family and everything he brought to Thunder U, but I’m glad he’s in a place where he can play now.”
