OU football: Fired up about Landry Jones?

Don't have a problem with him coming back. I think Landry's biggest problem is his fear of getting hurt. If you watch the games, when he is under pressure he folds. I don't think ability has anything to do with it. I think he is constantly thinking about what happened to Sam and Jason and subconsciously worrying about the same happening to him. I agree with one of the other responders in that I do not want Bell losing hope and leaving.

I'm not feeling any love for Landry. It's a shame he's struggling, after 2 seasons, to take his team into score in the red-zone. Jenni, to be Ballyhooed, you have to be able to do that, along with making plays with your legs. When the going gets tough, he checks out. Stoops leaves QB's, Jason, Sam, Landry, in to pad stats when the game is out of hand. He didn't pile up stats in games against top 15 teams and this past season was worse. The DOK is the only vehicle he has for stardom. We don't care where he goes in the draft. We don't care about records. We don't care about his love life. He has 12 more Saturdays to prove he's the real deal.

What I want to know is what has LJ done over the course of 4 years to become even better? Has he done the work in the off season to make himself a better runner, add quickness in the feet and legs, or does he just throw the football all summer? It was painfully evident last year when Broyles went down, he had no confidence to throw to other WRs. Truthfully he looked down right average against good teams w/o Broyles. But at least you know you're going to win a majority of your games with the experience and talent he does possess.

The day that it was announced that Landry was coming back, I started getting texts from the few OSU fans that I associate with (mostly because they're family). The most memorable: "Landry's back. You suck again." He's a perfectly fine quarterback most of the time. Most of the time. More important to me, though, than whether Landry came back is that Mike came back. We fix the D, we can Belldoze through any rough times that Landry might come upon.

If this is good for Landry and Stoops then it is good for the program. Glad to see him continue his education and build on his upcoming carrier. Sure he has had some issues, but if they occur this season Stoops needs to recognize and address then immediately.

OK I give Jones his props for being a good passer and being able to carve up defenses on a good day. That being said, however, Jones is one-dimensional. He can pass. That is all. He's not mobile when hurried, and no threat of a QB-kepper or option when he's playing. In fact, he's clumsy, slow, and on rare occasions when deciding to tuck the ball in and run, he can be counted on throwing himself on the turf and curling up in the fetal position to avoid the blow from the tackling opponent. Of course he'll also be about 5 yards short of the first down, but his immediate concern was his well-being. Blake Bell, on the other hand, is a mobile threat and would have stretched and made that first down. I've only seen Bell throw one time, and it was an interception, but he certainly ads more of a threat and one additional man to worry about, for defenses. For sure, Bell would add some excitement to the offense, if left in there for more than just 3rd-and-short downs. Maybe Stoops could dust off the play book and put some option back into the mix, which would be well-suited to Blake Bell. But no, things will be the same with Jones' return. OU won't do any worse than last year, though probably not any better. OU will get it's usual 9 or 10 wins. After seeing his Bedlam performance, I'm sure Cowboy fans are elated that he's returning.

Look, I like the kid. He's done some great things. But when the crap hits the fan he totally checks out of the game. You can see it in his face, his totally blank stare on the sidelines as important games slip away. I shudder to think about how we are going to be on offense with his secuity blanket, Ryan Broyles, not around. Stills is a monster and I hope he gets used as such next year. But to answer the origional question, as a life long sooner fan, no I am not jazzed he is back. Stoops is a loyal coach and will stick with a player when he is having troubles, but when you go from a heisman candidate to getting yanked when your offense is inside the 20 for your back up because you can't score, that pretty much says it all. VIVA BELL DOZER!!!!

Landry Jones is a good athlete,talented passer and possesses all of the knowledge and physical attributes of a star quarterback.What he lacks are the intangibles.I recall the first game he played here when Sam got hurt.He came in looking like a terrified freshman,and he was.I felt zero comfort at any point with him in the game that year.But he was a freshman.The problem is,as a junior,any time the game isn't going our way and the rest of the team isn't dominating he looks like and p,as like that terrified freshman again.Its not ok.It doesn't matter how many touchdowns you throw or records you break if,when your team need you most you go AWOL.Thats what is my issue us with him.Clutch,guts,gusto,whatever you wanna call it.Sam ad it,Jason had it,even Paul Thompson had it.LJ doesn't.

Personally, I think it's important that we consider the context of Landry's positioning in OU's recent line of stellar quarterbacks. Jason White and Sam Bradford were outstanding college quarterbacks, but they were also "gamers," capable of actually taking over and winning a football game. I certainly believe that we can place Landry in the former category, but perhaps not within the latter. Sure, Landry's had some games where he's absolutely been the difference between winning and losing. However, I just don't get the same "killer instinct"-vibe that we saw with OU's two most recent Heisman winners. As a result, I think a lot of people are quick to look for the next Jason or Sam in the program. Overall, I think OU's fortunate to have such a physically talented and experienced quarterback, and perhaps we should also focus on what the other 21 starters are bringing to the table. After all, it wasn't Landry who was destroying the locker room atmosphere (TL) or who was covering Baylor's wide receivers.

Landry is our QB, and we are very fortunate to have him return to lead the Sooners!! He has a terrific arm , a very accurate passer and with some new receivers on the team, should have a great year! I wish him the best in 2012 and whatever career he decides to pursue after OU!!! Can't wait until the season starts! I will be there for every game. Boomer Sooner!

As an OSU fan, I'm NOT thrilled he is returning. Sure, he doesn't scare me like Sam Bradford, but he scares me more than Rhett Bomar, Nate Hybl, or Paul Thompson did. And all of those guys beat OSU.

Jenni, if you want to wrap your head around who those people are that don't like LJ, it is simple. They are dumb and probably don't appreciate much in life. They are those constant complainers that doen't know how good they've got it until life places a Garret Gilbert in their lap...dude is heavy. They are the definition of idiots, they are followers of soul sucking vampires and they have no spines. Landry Jones is a stud athlete, and a Beast of a QB. A stronger O-Line, a group of solid receivers and most of all Marriage, will settle him down in the pocket, and allow him to finally reach his potential this fall. Boomer Sooner!

I'm conflicted on the return for Good/Bad Landry. He's an amazing passer - when he's playing well. But when he's not, he's a real stinker - bad decisions, bad passes, stares down receivers, lobs the ball just begging for an Int. Landry's Bedlam performance was the worst performance in Big 12 history by a "good" quarterback. OSU D was all over him, but he played like an idiot the entire game. I think Landry is great against lesser teams, but against stout competition he's 50/50 at best. Personally, I would have preferred Bell in a more conventional run/pass attack.

I think Jones is a terrific QB and OU is lucky to have someone with this much experience back in the fall. He only lacks in comparison to Sam Bradford. And most OU fans over the age of 40 will not likely see another Bradford during our lives.

Jones is a good kid and a VERY good passer in OU's offensive scheme. All qbs at OU are surrounded by excellent talent so even a mediocre qb should win the vast majority of their games at OU. What has always scared me about Jones is that almost all of OU's losses since he took over at qb have been due to either subpar or poor Jones performances. Think back, there haven't been that many. 2009-Nebraska 10-3 with Jones throwing a mind-boggling 5 picks;Texas Tech 41-13 with Jones completely ineffective;2010-Missouri 36-27. Jones with decent stats but 2 picks, including a real boner that led to a 58 yard return an an easy Mo td; A@M 33-19 with Jones underperforming but mostly the o-line to blame; 2011-OSU game a blowout but Jones unable to get anything done. I also can't forget Jones fumble without being touched in the 2009 Texas game. It is mostly Jones lack of athletic ability that makes me not overjoyed to have him back.

Glad! I hope the coaching staff gives Blake (or who ever the backup is) plenty of game snaps to get ready for next year.
