Do you say “home of the SOONERS!” at the end of the national anthem?

Home of the sooners! One of my favorite parts of goin to the game, it rumbles the stadium! I like kickoff too! Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooou

I fought in the jungles of Vietnam for a full year. Saying home of the Sooners does not offend me in the slightest. If it were being done out of disrespect for anyone then I would object but you cannot show me one time or one person that is saying it out of disrespect. The men, women and children at Sooner games always stand and remove their hats while the anthem is being sung. Often our military and others serving our country and community are introduced in the stadium and the audience always stand, applaud and cheer. Tell David Boren and the Daily Oklahoman that they need to focus on more important issues. Why not use your forum and take a stand against mosque being built in disrespectable locations or when our flag or Bible are burnt in states like California sound off about how wrong that is. Leave Saturday football alone. Let Stoops coach football and not be a puppet for you political agendas. I doubt you can find a state or people who have more respect for military, police, firefighters or anyone else that serves our country. Many of us even have family, close friends and co-workers that we love and respect who are serving. Get off your liberal soap box and stand up for something that is really important to the people of Oklahoma.

I served six years in the Oklahoma National Guard. My father was in the Air Force, my grandpa in the Marines, two uncles in the Marines, one uncle in the Navy, and one uncle in the Army. Just wanting to show the national pride that surrounds my family. I sing "home of the Sooners" each game, and even did so today at the Air Force game. To ask me not to, or to tell me I am disrespectful is to infringe upon my first amendment right of free speech. I took an oath to defend the Constitution, not the current anthem - which could be constitutionally changed.

Okay I agree with tons of the comments above. I think this writer wants to sell more newspapers and brought politics into an amazing sport like football. I am a student and honestly could careless about this debate. It is stupid. Saying home of the sooners is a tradition. I agree that if you don't like don't come to the game. I watched it on TV and they do not show the national anthem being played on TV, so just watch it on TV. My grandfather is a veteran and colonol and was an army ambassador for Kansas for many years in a row and he came to the game against Utah State and said it is all in good fun and JUST A GAME! He said SOONERS at the end and I have seen ROTC say SOONERS and I have seend soldiers say SOONERS. Replacing brave with sooners has nothing against the military or the brave who have fought or have been fighting for our nation. We appreciate all they have done for us or are doing for us. Replacing brave with sooners is just school pride and a tradition the people who are making this a big deal are a bunch of whinners does it matter NO! Get Over it! Our nation is HOME OF THE BRAVE AND HOME OF THE SOONERS!

I'm not a Sooner fan, but was stationed at Tinker about 10yrs ago. My wife - she's a Sooner fan. I've been to a few games, and heard this during the national anthem. It irked me and didn't sit right with me. I'm sure other sports cities do this, do I think it's right? No, but everyone one of those folks in the stands has the right to say whatever they want whenever they want. But, me, I think it's just in bad taste.

I was at ground zero April 19th. 1995 in okc.Two years in Vietnam, 25 plus yrs fire service serving the public. Seems no one can do something as small as this ( adding a little team pride to a already wonderful Proud song ).and not get nailed by all the left wing cry babies that are killing our country and turning it into a basket case of whiners with a six pac of lawyers at their beckon call just looking for anything to complain about....Get over it or wear ear plugs.

I have never said "sooners" at the end of the Anthem. Home of the "Brave" includes ALL of us but its NOT just about us as many would have you believe. I have never seen a version of our National Anthem that has a MULTIPLE CHOICE OPTION for the end of the song!! To sing it other than it was written shows nothing but self-absorbed disdain to the exclusion of anything else. And if your reason to use sooners in place of "brave" is because someone asked you NOT to do so is childish and immature at best and classless at worst.

I do. I love it, and I don't see anything disrespectful about it, at all. I think it is a way to sow team, and state, pride, as well as national pride. No one hoots or hollers during the song. EVERYONE stands at attention, most (like me) with their hand over their heart. Also, people seem to think that Sooner fans started this. Not so fast, my friend! I heard this same thing at Blazers games WAY before I heard it at an OU game. AND, if you have ever gone to a Dallas Stars game the fans yell "STARS!" whenever the word comes up in the song. Is that disrespectful, too? I also heard that at Houston Rockets games the crowd yells, "ROCKETS!" at the appropriate time. Is that disrespectful, as well? I also heard that Orioles fans yell "O's" whenever the "Oh say, can you see" comes up in the song. How about them? I mean, they're right there by D.C., so they MUST be tons more patriotic than us silly, stupid, hayseed Sooner fans, right? Why, all of a sudden, the outcry against saying "Sooners!" at the end of the national anthem.
