Postgame thoughts: OU, 31 – Cincinnati, 29

The Sooners defeated Cincinnati tonight, 31-29. But it wasn’t pretty. OU forced four Bearcat turnovers, though, and were fortunate that D.J. Woods muffed a fourth quarter punt inside the 10-yard-line.

Here’s the box score.

The Good: Landry Jones had 370 yards passing, two touchdowns and one interception. Ryan Broyles had 10 more catches and over 100 yards receiving. Freshman Kenny Stills was impressive again with four catches and 72 yards. Dejuan Miller stepped up, too, and had three catches for 66 yards. Jonathon Nelson might have been the best player on the field. One interception, one forced fumble just before D.J. Woods was about to cross the end zone, one touchdown-saving tackle, and multiple tackles.

The Bad: 13 penalties for 113 yards. Outgained by the Bearcats, 461-452. Cameron Kenney had a couple more drops, including a wide-open touchdown. Only rushed for 82 yards on 43 carries, an average of 1.9 yards per carry. Virtually no pass rush until the end of the game. Add your own in the comments below.

  Maybe the mantra for this years's team should be 'Just win Baby ! I wish we would look better but 4-0 was the goal to this point wasn't it ? But from my layman's perspective it doesn't look like the offensive line is improving their play like should be expected after 4 games. Cincy put some pretty good pressure on Jones in the second half. Texas' d-line is a lot better than anyone we've played so far this year. Gotta get better quick this week !

  Mack Brown used to have a d/coordinator named Carl Reese. Reese had been with Brown since before NoCar. They went back a long ways together and were thought of as best of friends. Then Stoops came along and beat teksus 5 in a row with a couple really embarrasing for the horns. Brown fired his old buddy Carl Reese and hired Gene Chizik to be dc in 05 & 06, OU lost both. Chizik jumps to IowaSt, so Duane Akina (db's coach) plays like a dc in 07 and OU wins. Brown then hires will muschamp and OU hasen't won since. As a matter of fact OU is 1-4 in the last 5 yrs. So what's the point? M Brown pulls the trigger and gets rid of assistants that ain't gett'n it done. Are u listening Bob Stoops?

  Wow, you'd think this is a team that's 0-4, not 4-0. I think some people have forgotten what the teams of the 90's were like. This team will lose probably 2-3 games this year. There are a ton of young guys playing, they'll get better as the year goes along.

  San Diego St. and Fresno St totally spanked Utah St. in the past two weeks. So the excuse that USU has great skill players, etc., has no weight. We are just not playing well. This kind of playing would get us creamed against Alabama, Ohio State, TCU, Oregon, and even Boise State. And we have at least the quality of talent that these teams do. It's all mental. All of our starting 22 exemplary high school careers. They come here, and they're underacheiving. It's the coaching. Started in 2003 against KSU. Bad offensive and defensive schemes have cost us many games since then. It is unrealistic to think you can win them all, but to lose by shooting yourself in the foot repeatedly is unacceptable.

  Don't we have a running back that could be a game breaker. Even Cincinatti kept gashing our defense for 8, 12, 13, yards at a whack. If we get 4-5 yards we seem to think it's great. We need to get some speed at the RB position. We rush for 82 yards against Cincinatti? Awful!

  Glad to be 4-0. Yes, this team still has a long way to go in regards to typical and expected OU standards, but they did show what they are capable of in rising to the occasion for FSU. I certainly don't agree with everything Lou Holtz says, but one of his better points once was "you can only get your team up [emotionally] about 2 or 3 games a year." I do agree with one particular observation by Charles K. as I was mystified why our players didn't pounce on the onside kick as it SLOWLY rolled the necessary 10 yards for CINCINNATI to recover it. I kept thinking, "OREGON!" Perhaps our coaches should review the 'on-side kick' rules before it costs us a close game.

  Hats off to Jay Norvell. He took up for his defenseless player that while laying on the ground was hit by a Cincinatti player. No late hit call by the officials! Contrast this with the supposed roughing the passer penalty against OU when the Cincy quarterback was hardly touched. Are we sure the officials were from the Big 12. If so, you could have had me fooled. I only hope these officials don't call anymore OU games, but I know better. Perhaps, Randy Crystal and Terry Porter trained these crooks.

  Same story for the last 7-8 years. We have left NC's on e the field, played very inconsistently, blah, blah, blah. The common denominator is the the coaching. Wilson and Venables ain't got it. The soft defense last night. No real pass rush by design. The prevent at the end, that pr.evented them from getting a field goal. Not trying to get a first down to seal the win. How 'bout Wilson? His running game is a bad joke. Murray running at third to half speed. Is he hurt, or what? Wilson needs to have a plexiglas belly button installed so he can see! If we just didn't have the talent, that would be one thing. We do have the talent. It has just underacheived for several years, and that falls squarely back on the coaches. Barry Switzer was able to beat great Nebraska teams by getting the utmost out of his players. When was the last time these coaches won a game they weren't supposed to win? I don't mind winning 31-29. However, that entire sequence in the last few minutes of the game was just poor coaching. Third and seven run. Prevent defense. Onside kick that should have never happened. This kind of tactic will cost us in places like College Station and Stillwater, and cost us unnecessesarily!

  I was at the game. Landry Jones had big stats and made some great throws but he had receivers open on every pass play. However, on many plays his decision making was so slow that by the time he released the ball, the receiver was covered. He needs to speed up his mental process if he is to become atop notch QB. My other comment is on the two OU players who covered punts and kept taking the ball into the endzone instead of grounding the ball in the field of play. They acted like they had never played together. As a result they blew a couple of good opportunities to pin the Bearcats deep in their own territory. Stoops has lots of work this week in preparation for Texas.

  It was an ugly win but a WIN none the less! The offensive play calling always puzzles me. We have a lot of young players still learning the Div I game. Last year we lost the close games, now we're winning them. It may not give you that warm fuzzy feeling but I'm extremely happy to be 4-0. I hope J. Nelson gets a game ball! He played inspired ball! It's a long season and a "W" with no significant injuries ought to make us very happy especially considering where we were at this time last year. Hopefully we'll continue to rack up the wins and improve week by week and peak in the playoff and the Bowl. BOOMER SOONER!

  can we say spoiled . really guys lets act like a bunch of sniveling whiners . its the players , no its the coaches fault , no its our fault .
