Improving public schools is the best way to grow Oklahoma's overall economy. Potential employers are attracted to states that provide a steady stream of well-educated people. Employers also want their own children to attend quality schools. Let's raise local sales taxes and invest them in education. Let's also maintain the state's existing income tax rates and invest it in education. Better-educated people will help reverse rising incarceration rates.
Critics will say Oklahoma has too many school districts, that it's still too difficult to remove bad teachers and that schools lack results-based accountability. They're right. So let's fix these problems! State schools Superintendent Janet Barresi's accountability plan would be a good staring point. Our children are worth fighting for. They deserve a better future. Education is Oklahoma's key to continued economic success.
