STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team advanced to the NCAA finals for a 14th consecutive season Friday by finishing second in its qualifier at Rec Hall on the Penn State University campus.

The Sooners totaled 433.850 points, which was 10 shy of qualifier winner Michigan. Illinois wrapped up the third and final spot with 426.900 points. Minnesota, Air Force and Nebraska failed to advance to the team finals, which are scheduled Saturday night. OU is going after its ninth national championship and sixth since 2002.

“We did what we were supposed to do to qualify for the team finals,” said OU coach Mark Williams, who was named West Region Coach of the Year on Thursday night. “We had a very good meet, were very consistent and hit 96 percent of our routines. We get to be in a national championship and compete for a title, so I'm excited to be part of that again.”

Oklahoma had two event leaders Friday, Michael Squires on the rings and Alec Robin on the vault. Squires scored a 15.850. Robin finished with a 15.300.

The other three teams in the NCAA finals were decided late Friday in another qualifier.
