Jessica Shults homered, and Keilani Ricketts pitched another solid game Friday as top-ranked Oklahoma hammered Texas 6-1 in a game between Big 12 softball leaders at McCombs Field in Austin.
OU (38-2 overall, 7-0 Big 12) took sole possession of first place in the league, getting 15 strikeouts in seven innings from Ricketts. Texas (38-5, 8-1) scored its only run in the bottom of the second inning, tying the score 1-1, before OU took control with three runs in the top of the third. The Sooners popped Texas starting pitcher Blaire Luna for four runs in four innings; reliever Holly Kern didn't fare much better, surrendering two runs in three innings.
The bottom portion of OU's batting order contributed the most. The Sooners finished with eight hits — seven of those came from Destinee Martinez, Callie Parsons and Brianna Turang.
The series continues at 5 p.m. Saturday.
OSU ENDS SKID, BEATS KANSAS
Tarah Ettinger and Amy Graham hit home runs Friday, leading Oklahoma State to a 3-1 win over Kansas in Big 12 softball in Stillwater. The win snapped the Cowgirls' (25-20 overall, 3-7 Big 12) six-game losing streak.
OSU managed just four hits, but the homers from Ettinger and Graham accounted for all three runs.
Oklahoma State pitcher Kat Espinosa was strong. She allowed a run on six hits and two walks. Espinosa struck out four.
Kansas (26-12, 3-4) scored its only run in the fourth inning. The Jayhawks failed to take advantage of three OSU errors.
The teams play again at noon Saturday. Fans can attend the game for free.
