STILLWATER — Less than an hour before the kickoff of Oklahoma State's spring game Saturday, the Cowboys landed their third verbal commitment of the 2014 recruiting class — and their second from Broken Arrow High School.
Linebacker Gyasi Akem, 6-foot-1, 216 pounds, announced on Twitter that he committed to OSU just before 1 p.m. Saturday.
Akem has been a fast-rising player on the recruiting circuit. He had 58 tackles and five sacks for Broken Arrow last season and was rated No. 4 on The Oklahoman's Super 30 recruit rankings.
Akem's teammate, Broken Arrow running back Devon Thomas, was Oklahoma State's first commitment of the 2014 class, announcing his decision last December after previously being committed to Oklahoma.
The Cowboys also have a commitment from Pearland, Texas, linebacker Justin Phillips.
Linebacker was expected to be one of the priorities in the 2014 class. There were no true linebackers included in the 2013 signing class, because it was not a position of need, but the Cowboys will need to build up depth this year to compensate.
