The top four seeds are set for the American Hockey League Western Conference playoffs, but the remaining four seeds won't be determined until the regular season ends on Sunday.
Texas has earned the No. 1 seed, Toronto will be No. 2, Grand Rapids No. 3 and Charlotte No. 4. The Barons, who host Houston Sunday at 4 p.m., could be seeded anywhere from fifth to eighth.
Heading into Sunday's finales, Houston is in fifth (90 points) followed by Oklahoma City (89), Rochester (88), Rockford (87) and Milwaukee (87). Rockford is the only team that doesn't play Sunday. The IceHogs need Milwaukee to lose on Sunday to get into the playoffs.
Coach Todd Nelson said he will not play goalie Yann Danis, who has been in net the past seven games and 15 of the last 16.
“Yann needs the rest,” Nelson said. “But make no bones about it I want the win (on Sunday) ... Niko (Hovinen) has won some big games for us.”
BARONS HONOR BUCKLAND
The Barons honored longtime public address announcer Ben Buckland between the first and second periods. Buckland will retire after the season but will still be a hockey ambassador.
The team played a two-minute video that featured former Blazers management and former Blazers star Joe Burton complimenting Buckland's three decades of service to hockey.
Prodigal CEO Bob Funk Jr., who runs the Barons for the Edmonton Oilers, presented Buckland with an award. Former Blazers coach Doug Sauter and former hockey radio legend John Brooks were in attendance.
BARONS TO OPEN PLAYOFFS AT HOME
The Barons don't know where they'll be seeded, or their first-round opponent, but they know they will open a best-of-five series hosting Games 1 and 2 Friday night and Saturday night at the Cox Convention Center.
