Are you a nerd or a geek?

What’s the proper term for an intense fan of something these days?  Nerd or geek?

I kind of use the terms interchangeably anymore, but the Bonfire Agency takes a look at the distinctions in a new blog post in advance of Comic-Con.

The post suggests that Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man was more of a nerd, whereas Andrew Garfield’s is more of a geek.

Ivan Cohen writes:

I thought Garfield was playing the John Romita version of Spidey, Maguire the more Ditko-flavored version. But maybe that’s because I’m just a big comics nerd at heart. Or am I a geek? It’s hard to keep track, especially when the labels are kind of arbitrary.

Being called either used to bug me, but as you can probably tell from the title of the blog, I came to terms with it.  To me, either a nerd or a geek anymore is just “someone who likes stuff.”  And isn’t that all of  us?

P.S. Cohen is right about the Ditko/Romita distinction.
