“The Avengers” movie was a box-office bonanza for Marvel Studios, and was released on DVD this week. Marvel’s comics branch is hoping for the same kind of relative return for the launch of its new Avengers comic book series, titled “Uncanny Avengers,” launching on Oct. 10.

“Uncanny Avengers” is the flagship book for the launch of “Marvel NOW!,” an initiative that will restart several of Marvel’s top series. It’s being drawn by former Oklahoman John Cassaday, known for his work on comics like “Planetary” and “Astonishing X-Men.” Rick Remender (“Uncanny X-Force”) will write the series.

The new series follows the best-selling “Avengers vs. X-Men,” which found members of two of Marvel’s most prominent super-teams on opposite sides. Now, members of both teams will join forces in “Uncanny Avengers.”

Marvel senior vice president and executive editor Tom Brevoort said the new book, which features members of the Avengers and the X-Men, marks a new status quo for Marvel heroes.

“It’s a direct outgrowth of the events of ‘Avengers vs. X-Men,’ but it’s something completely new,” Brevoort said in an email interview with The Oklahoman. “And it illustrates how, moving forward, the invisible line of demarcation between the X-Men titles and the rest of the Marvel Universe will no longer exist.”

Asked why Cassaday was the best choice for the project, Brevoort answered, “Why, his Oklahoma roots, of course!”
