Comics shipping, 7/30/08

by Matthew Price Published: July 29, 2008

Check out “Comic Book Comics” #2 for Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey’s humorous take on the history of the American comic-book industry.  Geoff Johns and Jerry Ordway share Power Girl’s story in “Justice Society of America” Annual 1, with a cover by Alex Ross. Meanwhile, Mark Millar and Steve McNiven continue the tale of Old Man Logan in “Wolverine” #67.  Full list and commentary (and, Cody, if you’re here, it’s a lot more commentary than last week) after the break.

The Will Pfeifer “Catwoman” run nears its conclusion, before Selina moves over to become a supporting character in Paul Dini’s “Detective Comics.”

COMIC BOOK COMICS #2

If you liked Action Philosophers, check this out. It’s the same team, Van Lente and Dunlavey, and it’s the same educational yet hilarious take on history.  Only this time, it’s the history of comics. Highly recommended.

DC SPECIAL CYBORG #3 (OF 5)

DEADWORLD FROZEN OVER #3 (OF 4) (MR)

DRAGONLANCE LEGENDS TIME OF THE TWINS #1 (OF 3) MOYANO CVR A

DYNAMO 5 #15

FANTASTIC FOUR TRUE STORY #1 (OF 4)

FICTION CLEMENS #3 (OF 3)

FRANK FRAZETTAS CREATURES #1

This sounds WAY more interesting than I thought it’d be. In fact, here’s the solicitation info, see if you agree:

Acclaimed writer RICK REMENDER (The Atom, Punisher War Journal) spins the untold adventures of Teddy Roosevelt, Rough Rider, President of the United States and paranormal investigator as he uncovers a plot concocted by a band of nefarious aliens in cahoots with a malevolent ancient Mayan demon to eradicate humanity and claim Earth for their own purposes.

GHOST WHISPERER #5

GREEN LANTERN #33

Next-to-last part of the “Secret Origin” storyline. (Edit: Despite the solicitation info, this is apparently the next-to-next-to-last part.)

GRIMM FAIRY TALES #29 (C: 0-0-1)

HAUNT OF HORROR LOVECRAFT #2 (OF 3) (MR)

HERCULES #1 (OF 5) 2ND PTG A CVR STERANKO

HUNTRESS YEAR ONE #6 (OF 6)

JIM BUTCHERS

DRESDEN FILES #4 (OF 4) WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

JOKERS ASYLUM TWO FACE #1

You think demand for this title has gone up from the time orders were in until day of release? I think maybe.

JUGHEAD #190

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF

AMERICA ANNUAL #1

Johns, Ordway. I’m already sold, but if you aren’t, it’s apparently the story of Power Girl revisiting Earth-2.  Sounds like a treat for longtime fans, for sure.

LOCKE & KEY #6

MAN WITH NO NAME #3

MARVEL SPOTLIGHT UNCANNY X-MEN 500 ISSUES

These Marvel Spotlights are hit-or-miss, but this one could be promising. Also, if you work in a comic-book store, you occasionally get some guy who hasn’t been in since 1994 asking what’s happened in “X-Men” since the last time he was in.  This could help with that.

MS MARVEL #29 SI

MUMBAI MACGUFFIN ONE SHOT (MR)

CIA operative seeks a downed NSA satellite, but sounds like it could be funny, too.

MUMMY MOVIE PREQUEL RISE & FALL OF XANGOS AX #4

NARCOPOLIS #4 (OF 4) (MR)

NARCOPOLIS #4 (OF 4) WRAP CVR (MR)

NEW BATTLESTAR GALACTICA SEASON ZERO #11

NEW DYNAMIX #5 (OF 5)

NEWUNIVERSAL 1959

Do I want to read a Newuniversal not by Warren Ellis? I don’t think I do, but I really liked Kieron Gillam’s “Phonogram,” so maybe I do a little bit.

NORTHLANDERS #8 (MR)

End of the first storyline. Recently reread #1 of this, and it not only holds up, it’s better. If you want to check it out, you can read it — for free, even! — at DC Comics’ Vertigo site.

PIGEONS FROM HELL #4 (OF 4)

PILOT SEASON THE CORE #1

I strangely can’t find a preview for this online, but Jonathan Hickman (“Nightly News”) is starting to grow on me. He was recently announced as the new writer for a “Sgt. Fury” series for Marvel.

PIRATES VS NINJAS DEBATE IN 08 ONE-SHOT

PROJECT SUPERPOWERS #5 (OF 7)

PROJECT SUPERPOWERS #5 (OF 7) ROSS ALT INCV CVR

REIGN IN HELL #1 (OF 8) (RES)

REIGN IN HELL #1 (OF 8) VAR ED (RES)

Written by Keith Giffen, there’s a battle for control in the infernal realm.

SECRET INVASION FANTASTIC FOUR #3 (OF 3) SI

SKAAR SON OF HULK #2

Hulk’s kid is a Tarzan-like barbarian on the Planet Hulk planet. First issue was cool; I’m on board.

SKRULLS VS POWER PACK #1 (OF 4)

SPIDER-MAN WITH GREAT POWER #5 (OF 5)

STAR TREK MIRROR IMAGES #2

STAR TREK YEAR FOUR

ENTERPRISE EXPERIMENT #4

STAR WARS REBELLION #15 VECTOR PART 7 (OF 12) (C: 1-0-0)

SUPERMAN BATMAN #50 (NOTE PRICE)

SUPERMAN BATMAN #50 VAR ED (NOTE PRICE)

The untold tale of Thomas Wayne’s meeting with Jor-El.  That sounds kinda Silver Agey, doesn’t it? (I like the Silver Age, I’m just sayin’.)

TALES FROM THE CRYPT #7 (C: 0-1-2)

TEEN TITANS #61

THOR #10

Set in Oklahoma, and one of Marvel’s best books. You can’t go wrong.

TRINITY #9

TRUE BELIEVERS #1 (OF 5)

So, this is Cary Bates and Paul Gulacy, and it’s not a biography of Stan Lee. (Though there IS a DVD biography of Stan Lee coming out with a similar title.)  Looks like kind of an offbeat tale of underground vigilantes, SHIELD, and illegal fight clubs for women. Worth flipping through, anyway, don’t you think?

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #124

UN-MEN #12 (MR)

WILDCATS #1

Am I a jerk if I point out we seemingly just HAD a Wildcats #1, by the all-star team of Grant Morrison and Jim Lee, and it pretty much fell off the face of the earth?  Man, that was disapppointing.  Christos Gage and Neil Googe are the team for this Wildcats #1.  Both of those guys have done good work in the past, so, who knows? Maybe good things.  I don’t know if I trust my ability to judge this one fairly.

WOLVERINE #67

WOLVERINE #67 MCNIVEN SKETCH VAR

Mark Millar’s future-vision of Wolverine. Wolverine needs to get to San Francisco, but he must get through the Ghost Riders.  Odds are very good Kyle and I will discuss this one on this week’s video.

WOLVERINE ORIGINS #27

The origin of Wolverine’s son, Daken.

X-MEN FIRST CLASS VOL 2 #14

X-MEN ODD MEN OUT

Two never-before-seen stories written by Roger Stern and illustrated by the late Dave Cockrum.
