Cowboys fans seeking comfort in these nervous final days before fall camp begins — off-the-field troubles and rebuilding concerns pending — can look west, way west, to Washington State, the opening foe on this season’s schedule.

The Cougars are, too, wading through preseason problems. Backup defensive tackle Dan Spitz has been lost after violating the NCAA’s banned substance policy. Andre Barrington, a redshirt freshman linebacker, is academically ineligible. And two signed recruits are non-qualifiers.

Devastating? Probably not. But this is a Washington State squad that was woefully bad a year ago. Worse than you could even imagine. Seriously.

Check this out: The Cougars finished last in the Pac-10 in every telling offensive AND defensive category a year ago.

Scoring. Rushing. Passing. Total yards.

Points allowed. Rushing defense. Passing defense. Total yards allowed.

And get this, they ranked last nationally in total yards — gained and surrendered!
