Denton (Texas) Guyer, featuring three OSU commitments including quarterback JW Walsh, suffered a 24-21 loss to Cibolo (Texas) Steele in the Texas Class 5A Division II state championship game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Receiver Josh Stewart and defensive end Jimmy Bean join Walsh on the Pokes’ commitment list.
It was a heartbreaking loss for Walsh, who threw a late interception as Guyer rallied to comeback and win. The Army All-American completed 9 of 17 pass attempts for 91 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss. Walsh also had 18 carries for 134 yards and one touchdown.
“I should have known better than to throw that ball when the game is on the line,” Walsh told ESPN.com.
Just one week earlier, Walsh led Guyer to a comeback win to earn the state title berth throwing the game-winning touchdown pass with under 25 seconds remaining to beat Longview in the semifinals.
