ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit: Can OSU’s ‘defense hold up and slow some people down?’

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit talked to The Oklahoman‘s Mel Bracht on Thursday about the Cowboys’ 2011 season:

The Cowboys are going to score a ton of points. With Justin Blackmon having a chance to come back and see what he can do with (Brandon) Weeden, I think Oklahoma State is going to be a team that is going to score a ton. The big question with them, is can their defense hold up and slow some people down? I think Bill Young is an outstanding defensive coordinator. I think in the last year or two you could see that Mike (Gundy) has made more of an effort to get more athletic ability on defense. There is a lot of youth over there. It’s hard to really know how good they can be. But for them to become a team that will challenge Oklahoma and Texas A&M and have a chance to get to a BCS bowl game, it obviously is going to be up to their defense.

Ok, I have to be honest. Every season A&M has a new savior at QB. Johnson was the pre-season big 12 offensive player of the year last year. Tannehill was a receiver before Johnson sucked so bad they need SOMEBODY/ANYBODY to play QB. I bet by mid season A&M is looking at whoever backs up Tannehill to be next years savior.

OK I have to be honest. There is one major difference between this a&m team and last years. Tannehill. We all know that we beat the aggies because johnson practically threw us the game. Yes, we had great defensive pressure on him and yes, we probably would have still found a way to win. With that being said, Tannehill runs their offense 3x better. We will have to prove it and ignore the "experts"

The irony here with the debate about the Pokes vs aTm is that a lot of people think aTm is lots better all around this year and figure they should beat the Pokes on account of home field advantage. BUT, you see the mental side of it is so important, because truthfully OSU had pretty much owned the Aggies under Miles and Gundy and if aTm is that much better this year they are gonna have to prove it because the Pokes are going down there with lots of confidence. The irony comes in with the comparison to Bedlam. The Pokes are good enough to take the Sooners down this year in Stillwater but Sooner fans will say they have to prove it and the fact that OU has owned them forever counts for more than one year of roster strength.
