Quick observations from Oklahoma State’s preseason roster, depth chart

Yesterday I gave some quick notes on the Oklahoma State incoming freshmen that have now officially been added to the rosters online and in the 2012 media guide.

Here are some other nuggets and observations:

Players who participated in spring football who are no longer on the roster
16 Drake Smithton, IR
22 Joe Aska, Jr., RB
23 Herschel Sims, RB
24 Darren Ross, WR
27 Matthew McClaran, IR
47 John Conaway, TE
52 Joe Okafor, OL
77 Gerron Anthony, OL
88 Kevin Johnson, WR
97 Diamonte Wheeler, DT

Really, the only player of note here is Gerron Anthony, who has been granted a medical hardship waiver. That means he is still on scholarship, but his playing days are over. He was listed as the backup right guard behind Lane Taylor on the pre-spring depth chart, but he did not play in the spring finale. Sophomore Eli Dickerson is now the backup at right guard, and junior college transfer Chris Grishby is behind him.

Herschel Sims (dismissed), Kevin Johnson (transfer), Joe Okafor (transfer) and Diamonte Wheeler (transfer) are of course off the roster now. The other players on that list are walk-ons who either decided to leave, or were cut, after the spring.

New additions to the roster, other than 2012 signing class
46 Brent Anderson, WR
63 Hunter Endres, OL
67 Hunter Higgins, OL

Number changes
Backup fullback Teddy Johnson, who was No. 36, is now No. 39.
Backup right tackle Daniel Koenig, who was No. 85, is now No. 58.

Depth chart notes

Freshman C.J. Curry is listed as Tracy Moore’s backup at wide receiver. Charlie Moore was there at the start of the spring, but he has since moved to the other outside spot. And despite Charlie Moore’s tremendous performance in the spring finale, senior Isaiah Anderson is still listed as the starter at that spot.

Calvin Barnett is officially listed as a starter at defensive tackle. He was third string on the pre-spring depth chart but had moved up to a No. 1 spot by the end of practice.

Lavocheya Cooper is still the No. 1 strong safety. But safeties coach Van Malone recently told me that Shamiel Gary will continue to challenge, and that there are certain packages where he is “the guy.”

David Glidden is the projected punt returner, with Justin Gilbert listed behind him. Josh Stewart, who bobbled several returns during the spring finale, is not listed on the depth chart at that position.

One more thing: Transfer kicker Kip Smith is not yet on the official roster. I’ve been told the program is “not ready to give the full green light quite yet.” But I do know Smith is on the team’s internal roster. My guess is he’s still getting enrolled and finalizing those types of details.
