Though TCU is a new Big 12 opponent for OSU, the Cowboy coaching staff has been going head-to-head with the Horned Frogs for years on the recruiting trail.

Because of TCU’s location in the Dallas metroplex, a high school football hotbed, OSU coach Mike Gundy and TCU coach Gary Patterson often find themselves scouting the same teams.

“Coach Patterson’s cordial to me, and I’m cordial to him,” Gundy said. “We’re trying to watch guys, and I’m not telling him who I’m looking at, and he’s not telling me who he’s looking at. Because sometimes we look at players other schools don’t.”

Players on OSU’s current roster who also had interest from TCU, according to the OSU media guide, include receiver Torrance Carr, linebackers Alex Elkins, Lyndell Johnson and Caleb Lavey, cornerbacks Justin Gilbert and Devin Hedgepeth, center Jake Jenkins and running back Desmond Roland.

Perhaps the most notable recruiting battle between OSU and TCU was for running back Kendall Hunter, who chose the Cowboys and became the school’s fourth-all-time leading rusher.
