High school coach said Allen came away impressed with Cowboys' coaching staff.

Oklahoma State did not sign a quarterback in its 2013 recruiting class after Luke Del Rio decommited from the Cowboys and opted to walk on at Alabama following former offensive coordinator Todd Monken's departure from Stillwater to become the head coach at Southern Miss.

But the Cowboys are already a major player for one of the top signal-callers in the 2014 class.

Kyle Allen of Scottsdale (Ariz.) Desert Mountain, who is rated the No. 1 quarterback in the nation by Scout and fourth by Rivals, took an unofficial visit to OSU last weekend to attend the Cowboys' spring finale.

“I asked him, ‘Is it a yay, a nay, a maybe?'” said Tony Tabor, Allen's high school coach. “And he goes, ‘Oh, yeah, definitely a yay.' He was very impressed with the coaching staff. He really enjoyed talking with the offensive coordinator, Mike Yurcich.”

Allen, who sports a 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame, passed for more than 3,000 yards and tallied 36 touchdowns and seven interceptions as a junior while running an up-tempo spread offense that Tabor said is comparable to OSU's. Allen's long list of offers includes Texas A&M, UCLA, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Arizona and Arizona State, but Tabor estimates Allen would put OSU in his top 5 right now.

Tabor provides multiple unique links to OSU, starting with his family roots. He grew up in Perkins, his sister currently teaches at OSU and his parents live in Stillwater. Additionally, Tabor and OSU wide receivers coach Kasey Dunn played against each other in college when Tabor was at Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State) and Dunn at Idaho.

Tabor expects OSU to visit Allen at a Desert Mountain spring practice in early May.
