West Metro FB Player of the Week: PC North's Dre Holman
If you read Friday morning’s paper, I don’t think there’s much disguising how impressed I was with Dre Holman’s performance last Thursday night in Putnam City North’s 17-14 win over Edmond Santa Fe.
It’s asking a lot for a sophomore to carry the ball 29 times against a defense as physical as Santa Fe, but Holman handled the load. He ran hard and ran well, particularly in the second half, finishing with 129 yards for his first career 100-yard game.
The start of the season was rough for Holman, sitting out much of August camp and the first three games of the year with a pretty bad ankle injury. But in four games, he’s got 377 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
He says he’s still not quite back to full speed, but he was fast enough Thursday night. He’ll be asked to give a few more performances like that down the stretch, especially while Sam Wolfe waits on that broken collarbone to heal. He could still be out another week or two, at least.
Other contenders
Caleb Lee, QB, Putnam City: With the help of a newly established ground game, Lee is finally settling in to run the offense the way PC wants to. That allows him to use all of his skills. When things are going well, he’s accurate and efficient, with the ability to throw deep, too. He was 20 of 28 for 184 yards and three TDs in the 36-33 double-OT loss to Norman.
Brandon Taylor, QB, Mustang: The 6-foot-2, 200-pound sophomore completed 15 of 21 passes for 192 yards and four touchdowns in his first career start.
