FOOTBALL
Nick Canavan, Norman North
Though the T-Wolves were upset by Edmond Santa Fe and subsequently eliminated from the playoffs, Canavan was a force on both sides of the ball. He scored North lone TD and was all over the field defensively. But the biggest reason Canavan is recognized here is because the kid played with heart from kickoff through the final horn. Canavan ran hard, broke tackles and popped out of a gang tackles all night. At linebacker, he never let up on any play. An impressive show of moxie from one of the best all-around athletes in 6A.
Others:
Seth Zimmer, Norman
While the Tigers ended up on the wrong end of a blowout against Midwest City, Zimmer scored the first touchdown of the game on a pass from quarterback Chad Davis.
CROSS COUNTRY
Dustin Barrier, Norman North
The junior placed high all season and figured to be a top-15 placer at the Class 6A state championships. However, running his best race of the season, Barrier placed third and became the school’s first All-Stater in cross country. What’s more, he kicked in the final 50 yards and sped in one second ahead of the fourth-place runner.
Others:
Tanner Satterthwaite, Norman
Satterthwaite capped a tremendous late-season surge that saw him win the Mid-State Conference title and a 6A regional crown. The sophomore placed fourth at state and will head into the 2010 season as one of the favorites for the 6A title.
Megan Johnson, Norman
It’s rare that a 35th-place finish warrants runner of the week mention, but Johnson deserves it because of her fantastic season leading up to state. The top runner in 6A all season, Johnson was hit with the flu in the week leading up to state, missed several days of school and had fever up until two days before the race.
The illness prevented her from running anywhere near full strength. And it was a testament to the respect she has from other runners that several came up to her after the race to say they were sorry she had to incur such bad luck as getting sick just before the biggest race of the year.
