I usually don’t like not honoring groups for these player of the week picks. But it’s hard not to when Douglass’ defense shut out a Glenpool team that has made a habit of shutting out its opponents and until last week’s loss to Star Spencer was ranked No. 1 in the state. Douglass held the Warriors to just 173 yards of total offense and held Tulsa commit Marco Nelson to less than 100 yards rushing.
Douglass’ defense held Glenpool scoreless and kept the Trojans in games against McGuinness and Weatherford where the Trojans’ offense turned the ball over enough to put the games out of reach the other way. If Douglass’ defense keeps playing like this and the Trojans can keep from turning the ball over, they’ve got a great shot at winning a 4A state title.
Others:
Emilio Gatewood, Millwood: Gatewood kept up with his impressive second half of the season, running for 124 yards and three touchdowns in Millwood’s 28-7 win over Newkirk.
Brendon Jordan, John Marshall: Jordanjust keeps doing the things that help John Marshall win. In the Bears’ 42-7 win over Little Axe on the road Friday, Jordan ran for 179 yards and three touchdowns, threw for a touchdown and kicked a 32-yard field goal. None of Jordan’s touchdowns were particularly long but the consistency he’s shown as the Bears have gone 9-2 has been amazing.
Quinton Neil, Douglass: Neal ran for 82 yards on 19 carries in Douglass’ 14-0 win over Glenpool.
Kody Shields, John Marshall: Ran for 88 yards and a touchdown in John Marshall’s win over Little Axe.
