Three questions: Kingfisher-Lincoln Christian
Kingfisher will take on Lincoln Christian for the 2A gold ball Saturday afternoon at the Boone. Here’s an early look on some of the elements of this game.
Is Kingfisher’s defense for real, and can they stop Lincoln Christian WR Roman Wilson?
Last week was a great test for KF, going against some of the top playmakers in 2A in Millwood’s Emilio Gatewood and Kevonte Richardson. They passed with flying colors as Millwoods offense needed a short field to get their first two scores and never got on track throughout the night. KF can make big plays, forcing two interceptions last week, so there’s that and just an unrelenting desire to play assignment football. LC is a good match for KF’s defense, but it’s not a situation where the Yellowjackets look over matched.
Can Derek Patterson and the rest of the offense keep their momentum going?
Patterson was nearly flawless against Millwood and he seems to be playing with a lot of confidence right now. The LC coaches I sat next to in the playoffs were impressed with him. After passing for more than 2,000 yards in the regular season, he seems to have saved his best football for the right time. If there’s a rub, KF needs to be better in the red zone then they were last week. Several missed opportunities there against Millwood.
Who wins the intangibles?
I go with Kingfisher here simply because they are the underdog, or at least that’s what everyone thinks. They’re good enough to match up against Millwood, who were quite good this year so when you add a feeling of us against the world to that, it can be a powerful recipe. The margin for error is slim, though.
