In case you missed it, I wrote about Star SPencer standout Sharane Campbell in today’s Hoop Dreams feature.

Hoop Dreams: Breaking horses old hat for Star Spencer’s Sharane Campbell

I’ve always enjoyed talking to Campbell and it wasn’t any different for this story. One of the things I didn’t get to write about in the story was about how she wound up on the Air Oklahoma Stars summer basketball team.

Campbell was playing summer league basketball with a group of girls she played softball with several years ago when they played the Stars. The Stars won comfortable but Campbell clearly proved she belonged on the same court with the team made up of elite players from around the state. A parent from her team told her father Paul that they should play with the team but Paul wasn’t so sure.

“To be honest, I didn’t like the Stars,” Paul Campbell said. “I thought they were too arrogant.”

But after talking to one of the team’s assistant coaches, they decided to play in the AAU state tournament with the team. Campbell played, started and won the MVP in the tournament. So she stayed on for the national tournament that year in Springfield, Mo. The Stars wound up finishing as runner up in the tournament.

“From then on, we were hooked with them,” Paul Campbell said.
