Bishop McGuinness coach Tondrell Durham gave little indications before the season that he thought sophomore Joe Edmonds could develop into something special.

Well, we haven’t had to wait that long. No sir, not at all as Edmonds has been spectacular in the first eight games for the Irish.

Edmonds scored 31 points in two games in a pair of victories for McGuinness at the Deer Creek Festival, good enough to be named the Private Schools Player of the Week.

I don’t know if there is one thing that stands out about him, he’s just solid in just about every way possible. He’s got a nice little jump shot. He can move without the ball, but he’s not afraid to mix it up inside and get the big rebound.

Either way, the emergence of Edmonds and Matt Christiansen are two good reasons why Irish fans should be excited about what’s to come in 2010.

Other contenders

Cara Pugh, Irish, Basketball: With Caroline Cameron out for the season, Pugh is going to have to step up even more. She was good in her first test as the Irish won a pair of games at the Festival.
