West Metro POW: Dominique Raney, Putnam City
There are plenty of Putnam City players who would be great choices for the West Metro Player of the Week following the Pirates’ run to the Class 6A boys basketball championship.
Junior shooting guard Dominique Raney was the leading scorer for the week, so he pulls the honor, but Hunter Gibson, RonQuis Lewis, Brian Brown, Tre Payne, Willie Lester, Trey Thomas and Zech Smith all made major contributions to the victories.
And with four of those eight players — Raney, Lewis, Payne and Thomas — coming back next year, pencil in the Pirates as next year’s favorites.
Amric Fields and Tyler Neal, PC West: The Patriots’ two big men were super all year and got their team as far as it has ever been, one game away from the finals.
Joh’Vonna Mitchell and Cheniqwa Banks, PC North: Both girls reached double figures in nearly getting the Panthers into the 6A girls semifinals last week.
Spring sports candidates
Adam Cooper, Yukon boys golf: Cooper led the Millers to a team championship in a tournament hosted by Putnam City at Lake Hefner last week. Cooper posted a second-place 75, four strokes off the winning score and Yukon took a four-shot win over Carl Albert.
Drew McElhaney, Mustang boys soccer: McElhaney scored with two minutes remaining in a 1-0 win over Moore last week.
Caleb Lee, Putnam City baseball: Lee earned the pitching victory and went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs in the Pirates’ 18-4 win over Woodward.
