Santa Fe: Gunnar Nixon continues great year...
By Robert Przybylo
If I could get paid for being the Gunnar Nixon beat writer, I would be a busy, busy person. The Santa Fe track star makes news like every week it feels like.
Here’s the latest:
Nixon shines in national competition
Edmond Santa Fe’s Gunnar Nixon won the high jump and the 400-meter hurdles last weekend at the Youth Olympic Trials in Arlington, Texas.
Nixon’s high jump wasn’t as high as he would have hoped as he had to stop during the middle of the event to run the hurdles event and come back to the high jump.
He won the hurdles with a time of 52.66, .03 better than the second-place finisher.
The event was a qualifier for the first Youth Olympics event in Singapore in August. In order to be considered, you had to win your event. Nixon can only be selected for one event.
The USATF has to make all decisions by May 15.
And here is what the Youth Olympics site said about Nixon’s performance:
Gunnar Nixon (Santa Fe OK jr) As a decathlete, he defies categorization, but the 7-footer will be leading the HJ field here, and is a top candidate for the 400H (33″), where he has run 53.95 over the 36″ barriers.
