Any other week, I mean ANY OTHER WEEK, and Drew Dahlberg’s performance for the Edmond Memorial baseball team would easily be enough.

But not this week. Not when Santa Fe junior Gunnar Nixon earns the second best decathlon score by a high school athlete EVER. EVER.

Nixon and Kevin Lazas of Brentwood, Tenn., had a battle for the ages with Nixon edging him out by 63 points at the Arcadia Invitational.

It’s not just how great Nixon is (though he really is unbelievable), but it’s what he’s done for the Wolves team and their attitude.

In talking to Walter Henderson and coach Carl Hawkins, they both have stressed just how much Nixon’s work ethic and attitude has spread to the rest of the team.

So even on a weekend made for track and field (John Jacobs at OU), it’s Nixon in California who is earning the Edmond Player of the Week.

Other contenders

Drew Dahlberg, Memorial, Baseball: He ignites the team, and they gave out MVP awards, easily would have won it as Bulldogs won Edmond Wood Bat Tournament.

Thomas Rudd, North, Baseball: Rough week for the Huskies, but Rudd did throw a fine game in a 6-1 win against Norman on Friday.

Jordan Lopez, Santa Fe, Baseball: Had a great tournament minus the championship and is always a threat to make something happen.
