Hmm, always interesting when one gender wins the title but the other doesn’t in a certain year. When the Deer Creek girls soccer team won the championship last year, there’s no doubt the boys were proud.

And maybe a little envious, wanting to join their classmates. The boys are playing with that motivation this season as both soccer clubs are ranked No. 2 in Class 5A and the boys just clinched the district title with the 4-0 win against Capitol Hill on Thursday.

Deer Creek was 2-2 after a loss in the Bishop Kelley Invitational in early March. That was a long time ago as Deer Creek has rallied off 10 straight wins.

That would be impressive enough but no team has scored more than one goal in those 10 matches and the Antlers have earned six shutouts in that streak.

Leading the way has been Shawn McLaws and Jacob Romig. These wins haven’t just come against outmatched opponents.

Included in this streak are wins against Booker T. (No. 7), NW Classen (No. 5) Edmond North (6A No. 10) and an 8-1 domination at Bishop McGuinness.
