Santa Fe: Gunnar Nixon back in spotlight...

It should be another battle between Edmond Santa Fe’s Gunnar Nixon and Kevin Lazas of Brentwood, Tenn., in the decathlon at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake University in Iowa.

Nixon and Lazas have been battling each other the last couple of years with Nixon earning a slight edge. They are two of the 19 decathletes competing. Five college athletes will also be competing. Day 1 is Wednesday with the final five events Thursday. The championships run through Saturday.

This is a qualifying event for the Junior World Championships in July.

Santa Fe graduate Walter Henderson was going to participate but an injury has him on the sidelines. He is still going to help out Nixon.

Nixon’s coach for this event is Ray Davis from Arizona. Davis helped Nixon earlier this year in that epic battle with Lazas at the Arcadia Invitational.
