West Metro Speed Read: Game night is almost here

Rivalries aplenty in the West Metro, with Mustang-Yukon and Putnam City-PC North on Friday, so let’s get right to it. After all, this is supposed to be speedy:

Yukon

This season marks 100 years of football for the Millers, so coach Todd Wilson decided to do something special with the helmets. Not a major change, just a small tweak from the usual.

Originally, I thought it’d be a good idea for Yukon and Mustang to swap hosting the game the next two years, so that Mustang could have it at their new stadium for the first game this year, and Yukon could have it at their new place when it opens next season. But for the 100th year, it seems right for this game to kick off the season at Miller Pride Stadium.

As for football, I’m interested to see Yukon’s secondary in action against the Mustang spread this Friday night. Yukon has a lot of talent back there, but some of them are playing new positions, so it might take some game time for everyone to get on the same page. Wilson said defensive coordinator Steve Chard was happy with the team’s performance against Del City last week, and he said the team tackled much better than the previous scrimmage.

Mustang

I expect Mustang to be one of the top teams on the west side of the state by the time the season ends. However, I’m a little curious to see what the offense looks like in Week 1 at Yukon. It seems the Broncos have less depth at receiver than they expected, but the talent is there with David Glidden, Jon Luckey, Derek Garvin and some other less experienced young players.

The most interesting twist in Mustang has been the players’ enthusiasm about the defense. One player told me last week that the defense is farther along right now than it was in Week 7 last year.
