Game preview: Mustang at Lawton

Mustang (2-1) at Lawton (3-0)
When:
7:30 Friday
Where: Cameron Stadium, Lawton

Last week: Mustang put on an offensive show in a 47-21 rout of Bixby. Lawton rolled past Altus 28-0.

Why Mustang could win: The Bronco offense is getting back on track after Brandon Taylor threw for over 300 yards last week. The defense will be tested by Lawton’s skill players, but it’s yet to be seen what kind of impact the loss of QB Cody Miller will have on the Wolverines. If Mustang can exploit new QB Brandon Bartlett’s inexperience, it could be a major momentum swing.

Why Lawton could win: Even without Miller, the Lawton offense has a lot of weapons, the most important of which will be RB Deaquan Wojciechowski. If he can keep up his pace of rushing for nearly 130 yards per game, it will take significant pressure off Bartlett. And let’s not forget that the Lawton D is still pretty darn solid, too.

Key matchup: Taylor vs. Lawton DBs. Last year, Lawton turned the tide in this game with six interceptions of Mustang QB Jacinto Biorato. Taylor has thrown three picks so far, so he has taken care of the ball pretty well. He needs to avoid the big mistake Friday.

The pick: Lawton 27, Mustang 21. I got burned when I picked Mustang at Lawton last year. I got burned when I picked Lawton Mac over Lawton two weeks ago. If I get burned this week, at least it won’t be by picking against the Wolverines.
