After an 0-2 start last year, Guthrie was rolling heading into the showdown with the Titans. Then what happened? An all-out blitz by Carl Albert.
Before you could blink, it was 33-0 at halftime en route to a 40-14 win that Guthre coach Rafe Watkins said “wasn’t even close to being that competitive.”
So as we head into another CA-GHS showdown, what’s Guthrie’s mentality toward that beatdown?
We’ve worn that film out. All spring, all summer, that’s what we watched. How easy that was for Carl Albert – it made us sick.” – Watkins
Quarterback Bryan Dutton was just a freshman in that one, and you know he wants this game. But might there be some deer-in-the-headlight looks Friday?
The Bluejays are starting three freshmen on defense. And as Watkins said, you can’t duplicate the atmosphere that will be Friday night.
But then again, Guthrie also has stars like Kentrell Brothers and Landry Chappell. Those kids are leaders, and they’re going to make sure it’s not a 26-point blowout this season.
