A conversation between myself and Piedmont’s Keith Vick back in August: Keith, just want to let you know you’re going to be the focus of our Class 4A football preview. Gonna be profiling you and Santa Fe South WR Abraham Luna and dubbing you guys ‘the best WRs you haven’t heard of yet.’

Long pause…frustrated sigh…And Vick says he doesn’t think he’ll be playing football this season because of all the concussions he’s had.

What? That was a killer. Talk about an awkward moment. But he said he would still be playing basketball. And I knew with the skills he had, I would be revisiting the Vick story at a later date.

That date was yesterday. I didn’t expect the Kingfisher JV team to give Piedmont a run for its money, but I did want to see Vick in action. He’s a much different player than I had anticipated.

Coach Wagner pointed out what I was thinking that Vick is a lot more team-oriented this year. Very unselfish and looks to get his teammates involved.

Of course, when you watch him fly through the air on his dunks, sometimes it’s OK to let Vick just do his thing.

Vick and the rest of the Wildcats play Heritage Hall on Saturday night in the semifinals of the Buckle of the Wheatbelt Tournament at Kingfisher. Of course one of the reasons that is interesting is because Tanner Tepe is a transfer from Piedmont playing for the Chargers.
