Are the Midwest City girls bored?
The answer to this question better be an emphatic NO. Anyway, I’m not saying the Midwest City girls basketball team is so dominant that nobody can touch them, but their last two outings in winning the Titan Classic were not vintage Bomber basketball.
Fellow chums Scott Wright and Ryan Aber got to see the Art Bode’s girls in the semifinals and championship, wins over very good Millwood and Del City teams and seemed like not all was rosy in Bomber Country.
When they were tested, the girls came through big time. Marisha Wallace has become the break out star, IMO, this season, and I love watching Ashley Clark play. However, is there cause for concern? We’ll have to wait and see.
Other things that stood out in OKC area girls action:
- I like Putnam City North a lot. Going east should help in securing a state tournament berth, too. Couldn’t you right now see the West being represented by Norman, Midwest City, Edmond Santa Fe and Edmond Memorial? The East by Putnam North, Del City, Edmond North and Jenks? Way too early to make such proclamations, but it’s dang possible. With the Panthers, love the inside presence of Joh’Vonna Mitchell, the outside shooting of Alexis Watson, the grittiness of Kelsey Abraham and the leadership/quickness of Rae Rae Brannon.
- How will Memorial bounce back? After that gut-wrenching overtime loss to Santa Fe, how will Shane Coffey’s girls respond Friday against Southmoore? Still believe that the Bulldogs are among the five best teams in the state but losses to North and Santa Fe might hurt more mentally. Coffey told me after Tuesday’s game that championship teams (which he believe he has) don’t let one or two-game slides derail a season.
- Bethel is looking really solid in 3A right now. Kansas has slipped up a bit, and don’t be shocked to see Jerry Johnson’s girls ranked No. 1 when the new rankings come out next week. A good tournament win at Newcastle and a lot of different options between Taylor and McKenzie Cooper and Sami Martin.
