Scott's Power Poll: Edmond Memorial holds steady after loss
The carry-over of tournaments to Monday because of last week’s bad weather really jacked up the whole week, so the Power Poll is coming to you a couple days later than usual. A lot of drama in the last week involving Power Poll teams, but not a lot of movement, especially among the large schools. Let’s not delay any longer. To the polls:
Large Schools (4A-6A)
1. Douglass, 4A (12-4): No more crossing state lines for the Trojans this season, but they’ve got a stout All-City schedule remaining, with Millwood (twice), Southeast, Capitol Hill, Northeast and Northwest Classen in February. Last week’s ranking: 1
2. Edmond Memorial, 6A (14-1): Well, the perfect season is tough to accomplish, but the Bulldogs are still 6A’s best team, despite the loss at Edmond Santa Fe on Tuesday night. But seeing them lose boosted the confidence of the dozen or so teams behind them hoping to make a gold ball run. Last week’s ranking: 2
3. Tulsa Washington, 5A (11-0): As it turns out, the Hornets’ biggest challenge isn’t going to be from an opponent, but in how they are able to handle playing without their coach. Shea Seals was suspended indefinitely last week after his arrest on suspicion of DUI. Last week’s ranking: 3
4. Midwest City, 6A (12-2): The Bombers held onto the No. 4 spot by winning at Santa Fe three nights before Memorial got beat on the same court. This team is growing up every game, and they get their shot at Memorial next week. Last week’s ranking: 4
5. Edmond Santa Fe, 6A (10-3): The win over Memorial shows just how valuable Michael Onuoha’s presence in the middle is for this team. Without him, Memorial beat the Wolves with ease. Last week’s ranking: 5
6. Mustang, 6A (14-2): These guys just keep winning, taking the title at the Bruce Gray Invitational on Monday night. Don’t sleep on these guys. They haven’t lost in 2011. Last week’s ranking: 6
7. Tulsa Union, 6A (10-3): One of several Power Poll teams to lose a tournament to weather, but the Redskins still picked up a couple solid wins. Bixby, Owasso and Jenks are the next three on the schedule, which will be key games as Union tries to seal up the east side’s top playoff seed. Last week’s ranking: 7
8. Muskogee, 6A (12-3): Bounced back from the bad loss to Union with good wins over Jenks and Owasso to hold their spot in the poll. Last week’s ranking: 8
9. Ardmore, 5A (11-4): With their tournament cancelled, the Tigers’ only action was a rout of Durant. Their talent is keeping them at No. 2 in the 5A rankings, but they’ll need to avoid any more questionable losses. Last week’s ranking: 9
10. Northwest Classen, 5A (13-3): The 14-point loss to Norman was a surprise, but Norman is going to surprise a lot of people down the stretch. So ultimately, the Knights held onto the 10 spot, because they bounced back from the loss with two strong wins. Last week’s ranking: 10
Just missed the cut
Lawton MacArthur, 5A (11-4): Look out for these dudes. They’re winning big games, including the Titan Classic title. They’re not pretty, but they’re getting it done.
Bishop McGuinness, 5A (13-6): A chance to avenge an earlier loss to Stillwater when the Pioneers visit on Friday. Last week’s ranking: 10
