Putnam City's Casey Curtis hitting the road for football camps

A big part of football recruiting these days is selling yourself to college programs and getting noticed in camps and combines.

After a junior season that put him on the recruiting map, Putnam City running back Casey Curtis is working the camp circuit in hopes of landing some scholarship offers. Curtis, a 5-foot-9 speedster who has bulked up to 182 pounds this spring, was in Houston for a combine in early March, and he’ll be double-dipping in the Dallas-Fort Worth area this weekend.

He’ll be traveling with Yukon prospects DB Derek Deeds and QB Corben Jones as several state players head to Dallas for a Nike combine on Saturday. And Nike is also sponsoring a camp in Fort Worth on Sunday.

“It’s pretty fun,” Curtis said of the camp circuit. “It’s interesting to meet all the different people. I’ve been invited to summer camps at OSU and Missouri, so I’m looking forward to those.”

Curtis said most colleges are still recruiting him as an athlete. He rushed for 1,659 yards and 21 touchdowns last season and started as a slot receiver for the Pirates as a sophomore. He also hopes to show that he could play cornerback at the next level if necessary.

Deeds is staying busy himself. He was in Las Vegas over spring break for a 7-on-7 camp and made a stop at the Arizona State campus to meet the football coaching staff on the drive home.
