Matt Luetjen’s Army career didn’t last as long as he planned, but it opened the door to another opportunity he’ll enjoy.
Luetjen was medically retired from the Army because of a night vision issue after two years of school, and now, the former Hennessey football star has rejoined his younger brother, Derrick Luetjen, at Tulsa University.
“Matt took the summer to decide, and he talked with coach Bill Blankenship,” said his father Rick Luetjen, the new head coach at Hennessey. “He always wanted to play with Derrick again, so it will be a good deal. It’s a good fit for him.”
Derrick, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound redshirt freshman, is a second-string defensive lineman.
Matt will have three years to play his final two seasons of eligibility. The 6-foot, 205-pounder was listed as a fullback on the Army roster, but could play a variety of positions at Tulsa.
